AN INSPECTOR CALLS

RATIONALE

“An Inspector Calls” is a play by J.B.Priestly which was set in 1912 before World War I but was first performed in 1945. The play is focussed around the Birling family. The story narrows how in one night, life can take an unexpected turn. It begins with the celebration of the engagement between Gerald and Sheila, the daughter of the family, when they received an unexpected visit of Inspector Goole. A young girl called Eva Smith has decided to suicide her own life and he is investigating the reason why it has happened. During the play we can see how without even speaking the inspector, the characters reveal themselves and relate to the tragic life of the victim. Priestley’s main aim was to encourage people to take responsibility for their actions, not to shift the blame on others. However, for my part, my goal is to finish the work with a closed end thus eliminating the possibility of multiple interpretations. Because the story has not a defined end and to achieve my aim, for in this essay I will create an alternate ending taking the role of the author. Then only Mr and Mrs. Birling and Gerald are  worried about their reputation more than Eva Smiths’ death. Eric and Sheila are still in shock.

AN INSPECTOR CALLS – alternative ending

(Knock on the door and one of the maids go to open) –good morning , I'm the police inspector and I’m here for the case of the young girl suicided in nursery.
BIRLING – A while ago came home an inspector who was talking about the same case but then it seemed to be that until then it had not really occurred. I know it seems odd (not quite sure about what to say) but please, can you show us your badge?
INSPECTOR – Here is my badge. Now you tell me on that confusion has happened a while ago.
SHEILA – oh papa, be honest with the inspector. Keep your pride away and tell everything that happened, think on the poor Eva Smith.
BIRLING – (With murderous eye ) Sheila please, obviously we will work with the inspector to find the guilty – (pouring himself a glass of rum) – focusing on what happened, we were held in engagement of Gerald and my daughter Sheila when Goole stormed into the room and press out all the information he needed to relate us to the life of Eva Smith and made us feel guilty. All these without even saying a word… we don’t know how he did it agent, but clearly he is a liar.
GERALD – of course it is a impostor! We do not even know if we're talking about the same woman. (Addressing the inspector) Individually and at different time he showed an Eva Smith’s photo to everyone, but nobody saw others so we can be talking about different people and not know it.
SHEILA – Oh my God! The important thing now is to help the inspector to resolve the actual case. I’ll tell him the facts and we will go out of doubt, he is a professional .
(After a long talk about what happened and a few drinks on Gerald, Birling and Eric)
ERIC – inspector excuse me, I hope my sister has finished her explanation  because I have an idea of who could be the murderer – (swinging on itself).
MRS.BIRLING – honey, we already know your problems with drinking, but was not enough with what you did to that girl? Please do not say vulgarities.
INSPECTOR – let the man speak maybe it’s great his drunkenness.
ERIC – as I took the last drink (trying to vocalize ) I tried to see who was the Inspector Goole. He came here looking statements to incriminate a crime that has not occurred yet. No matter if we talked about the same girl or not, but he made us to feel guilty about something that had not occurred until you came (looking to the new inspector). Now we should know where went Goole after leaving our house because it has the perfect alibi and has us alienated to think that we are guilty.
INSPECTOR – you  think better drunk! I call immediately to police to investigate and see if it is true.
(Mr. Birling tells him where is the phone room but when they are on the way the phone starts ringing. Mr. Birling pick up the phone but quickly passed it to the inspector. His face is more awe as conversation increases)
INSPECTOR – It  was the chief, they  just found the body of Goole, lifeless and with a note. Someone is bringing  the note, it is addressed to you.
(The letter arrives and the inspector reads loudly)
SHEILA – Gerald and Eric were right... this man made us reveal things that had no relation to each other, he has made us feel guilty because his life was a misery and wanted to pay with us and the life of this poor girl. He mistreated her psychologically for months as it did with us one night to vent their fury.
INSPECTOR – thank you very much without you  we couldn’t have linking both cases.
BIRLING – thank you very much (says looking at the rest of the family) now we can all sleep more soundly knowing that we have not been guilty of murder.

( the inspector leaves the house and family celebration ends, logically less animated)

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

RATIONAL
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a novel of the 60’s that focuses on dealing with controversial issues such as the violation of right and racial inequality – racism –. It is based on the experience of the author as a child, about an incident occurred near her city.
After reading the book and the analysis of their parts more featured, I have decided to focus this letter from the character Scout to Dill because since the beginning of the story he leaves Maycomb to go with with his aunt until the following summer so he lost the most important events of the story. Scout, still in love with Dill, talks about her start in school, she explains him the case that is covering Atticus, she speaks also about the mishap with Bob Ewell and finally she meet his great hero, Boo Radley.

LETTER
May 8, 1930

Dear Dill,

How are you? How is your live there? Do you miss Jem and me? Here in Maycomb many things have happened, you cannot believe the changes we have lived... there are some very good but others less so.

In summer Jem and I started school and Atticus accepted a case of racism in the town, Tom Robinson was accused of raping a young white woman named Mayella Ewell, daughter of the town drunk, Bob Ewell. When the people took consciousness, the kids at school made fun of us and called Atticus "nigga lover" I do not like they mess with him and I try to defend the family... but I get into fight and Atticus scolds me, He told me that I don’t have to fight with no one...
Oh Dill, you don’t know how Jem and I miss you, you should have seen what made us Bob, it was so frightening. Atticus managed to prove that Tom was not guilty, that was Mayella who insinuated to him when Bob discovered, but even so the jury decided to ignore the clear evidence and accused the poor Tom… is so unfair! After that, Bob, drunk as usual, swore revenge for everything and he attacked us on Halloween. Bob attacked us when we were alone. Jem and I were returning home from a Halloween show at school when suddenly, Bob Ewell hit and broke Jem’s arm, but in the middle of this unexpected attack someone came and saved us. The mysterious man brought us home and, can you imagine who is the mysterious man? Is none other than the reclusive Boo Radley! The terrifying neighbor who had never been seen by the people and which run many dark rumors. Can you believe it? Is my new hero.
After all, the sheriff of Maycomb discovered that Bob Ewell died during the fight. Atticus considered it being a justifiable homicide and Boo Radley has to be declared innocent without problems. However, I think this cannot be, Boo expose to public in a trial would cause great harm, something similar like To Kill a Mockingbird. It is something that taught me Atticus one day. Mockingbird sing alone, they don’t hurt anyone like Boo Radley, is an evil act leading him to the public.

These are the changes in Maycomb, many unexpected adventures! I hope to hear news soon so I can tell how the story ends.

With Love,

 Scout

HOW THE INTERNET INFLUENCES IN THE LANGUAGES

The other day, we saw that video in class of David Crystal on the influence of the Internet in languages, especially English. So far I had not thought this really the case, but if we look closely, we are at a time when the electronic devices dominate the progress, our mark on history revolves around the Internet and technologies.

On many occasions, and virally on the Internet, we have seen babies who give a paper magazine and try to enlarge the images as if it were an iPad, this is because we are in the era of new technologies, and the latest generation doesn’t know a world without the Internet. Digital communication is a fact that we all accept and generally considered positive as it facilitates the transmission of messages and information immediately and free.

Children known as Generation Z, born after 1995, have learned to communicate more touch than with real interactions, and is also very typical of their language expression through graphics as emoticons or abbreviations that represent, joining several punctuation as can be these: ": ) " ": = )".

In 2006 at the University of Lancaster, professor and researcher Tony McEnery concluded that the Generation Z had a vocabulary of 12.600 words, while young people aged 25 to 34 had almost twice 21.400 words. This lack of vocabulary abounds in simple phrases, abbreviations or phonetic symbols that keep repeating and involving degradation in language. The tendency to send short messages increasingly prevents reflective textual planning and therefore the lexical language development.

Some people think that this is a worsening or backward for language, but on the other hand, there are people who think that this is only an advance, which form apart of our time and that is what characterizes our moment

I opted for the second opinion, and you? What do you think?

PRIVACY IN SOCIAL NETWORKS?

Social networks are a complete entertainment tool to be used judiciously and with responsability and madurity. Privacy means the level of protection available to all data and information that a person enters in a social network, in the degree of accessibility than other users may have to them.

Te first thing we can and must do when we create an account on a social network is to ensure that privacy is properly configured. We must be careful, with the amount of information available to others. it is advisable to check periodically that only have access to your closest friends and family, like you have to be careful with public comments made to avoid future problems like not being able to access a job for old mistakes.

Moreover, it is therefore important to know how works the electronic devices to know where and to whom we give our personal data. All the information we search on the Internet is temporarily stored in a database that records all of our movements. this information is analyzed by companies like Google or Facebook, because you're using their services, and the profile that they detect as yours is stored in a memory called cache.

So once again, our personal information is verified by unknown people who know our life even better than us .Every step we make in internet are saved and stored for life, it is extremely important to be careful and be responsible.
